Director general of Export Processing Zone Administration (EPZA) W.G. Huang noted that export value, number of firms and employees all have grown in Taiwan’s export processing zones (EPZs), with revenues likely to hit historical high of NT$380 billion (US$12.67 billion) in the whole year.

Huang stressed that EPZA will keep developing more distinct industrial clusters in the zone and promoting investments in the Taichung Software Park, Nanzhi Export Processing Zone, and Kaohsiung Software Park.

Some 81% of the 149 firms in the Kaohsiung Software Park are knowledge-intensive business, including Ching Fu Shipbuilding, Shogakukan (Japan), Hon Hai Group, Brogent Technologies Inc., Ultra Quantum E-ware Research Co., Mirax Technology Corp., and Ling Cheng Technology Co., said Huang. The park’s annual production value is likely to exceed NT$8 billion (US$266.67 million) in the future.

Huang said that the Kaohsiung EPZ will continue to develop LCD, LED, and IC industries, with 47 firms including Kaohsiung Opto-Electronics Inc., Radiant Opto-Electronics, and Taiflex Scientific Co. Ltd.

With 32 firms including ASE Group, NXP Semiconductors Taiwan Ltd., and Orient Semiconductor Electronic, the Nanzih EPZ is composed of semiconductor foundries and testing & packaging manufacturers, which account for 90% of output value at the zone.

Immune to a sagging global economy, firms in the EPZs achieved combined NT$337.8 billion (US$11.26 billion) in export value in the first 11 months, with 540 companies and 73,000 employees.

Huang said that revenues in the EPZs reached NT$312.9 billion (US$10.43 billion) from January to October, which is expected to challenge the historical high of NT$379.6 billion (US$12.65 billion) in 2010 due to high seasons in November and December.
